Context
Pilot project to monitor cassava viral diseases developed with field teams in West Africa to improve early detection and response planning.
Problem
Cassava viral epidemics spread quickly and are hard to anticipate without systematic surveillance and robust spatial analysis. Local teams often lack simple tools to visualize risk and prioritize interventions.
Solution
CVSmart-Cassava offers:
- easy import of field observations (mobile forms);
- interactive mapping of outbreaks and estimated spread;
- stochastic and spatial models to estimate epidemic probability and impacts;
- operational recommendations (intervention priorities, focus areas for awareness).
Technologies
- Python + Streamlit UI;
- Folium / Leaflet for interactive maps;
- Lightweight JavaScript for UX;
- Modelling: spatio-temporal stochastic models, Bayesian estimation for uncertainty quantification.
Impact
- Improved planning of surveillance and control campaigns.
- Adopted by local teams for resource prioritization.
